Your Fair Share

Fare Share is a consumer-owned cooperative. That means that although anyone can shop here, WHEN YOU JOIN IT, YOU OWN IT! Each Owner of Fare Share Co-op also makes an "equity" payment—this is YOUR share of Fare Share.

If you leave the Co-op, you can take your OWNER SHARE with you. With thirty days notice, a Fare Share OWNER SHARE is completely refundable to owners in good standing. Some owners donate their OWNER SHARE to Fare Share Co-op when they move away.

We want everyone who WANTS to join Fare Share, to be ABLE to join, so the cost of a Fare Share OWNER SHARE is on a sliding scale. To the right is information about income levels in Oxford County so that you have a context to work with to decide what you or your family should pay. We don’t ask you how you made your decision. Everyone’s situation is different. You decide what you will pay, and whether you will pay all at once or over time. If you receive EBT/SNAP or WIC, you qualify to use Fare Share’s Food Access Fund to cover your OWNER SHARE.

Owner Dues & Shares

WHAT ARE DUES? Dues are an annual payment of $15.00 (that’s $1/month) that helps pay for the cost of mailings, meetings and other member-owner services.

WHAT IS AN OWNER SHARE? Being a co-op member means being an owner in a very real sense. It is a tangible manifestation of your faith and commitment to your co-op.

An OWNER SHARE is your one-time equity payment to become an owner of Fare Share Co-op. Where other types of businesses get capital from private investors or by selling shares on the open market, co-ops rely on OWNER SHARES. When you join Fare Share Co-op, the money you pay for your OWNER SHARE goes toward buying the food that fills our shelves, the building that houses us, and the future of our co-op.

Join or renew your ownership the next time you are in the Market.

Download and print this form to join Fare Share. You can mail it to the Co-op with your payment, or just bring it in the next time you are in the market.

Volunteer

Any owner of Fare Share will save money by joining, but families of working-owners ("volunteers") receive ongoing regular discounts of 5% to 10%, and receive a lower mark-up on their pre-orders.

Record your hours on the volunteer sheet next to the office. When recorded, we can ensure that your hours are applied and that you will receive your discount. All hours worked will be recorded in the month you work and your discount will take effect the following month.

Some working-owners show up in the Market now and then, with or without notice, for a shift of an hour or more. Others take on projects or other tasks which we count on them to do regularly. It's easier for Fare Share staff if you sign up for a regular schedule of volunteering, but if you don't mind performing simple tasks like cleaning shelves, repacking bulk or sweeping the floor, we can often accommodate a drop-in volunteer.

When you volunteer in the market, you are one of the faces of Fare Share Co-op. Whether a customer is here to ask for the name of a local dairy farm, find gluten-free flour, or a fruit snack, your smile and helpfulness go a long way toward letting them know what a wonderful community we have here.

And don't forget, working-owners can serve on the Board or a committee, coordinate and help with events and fundraising, participate in cleaning projects, carpentry gigs, and the annual inventory. There are many opportunities. If you have an idea, let us know!

If you are interested in becoming a working owner, or you have further questions, feel free to contact us and we'll be happy to work with you.
